Primark

 Do you get it yet......?

Ok so fresh with new resolve following Susie So Sos fantastic post on shopping at Primark I headed off , with a friend for moral support, to try again. On the agenda - jumpers, preferrably with some content that is natural, a scarf, a belt, p.js ( for me this time), jewellery, and some kids bedding. Quite a list really.

  • The first thing I did wrong was go at 11am rather than 9am, but I have 3 kids to get to school and the darn shop is a half an hour drive and then a walk and a coffee away so whats a gal to do! I did see a rather nice jacket just inside the entrance, but on closer inspection the collar was rather wonky so I hastily moved on to the 'knitwear'.
  • Now I did try, really I did. I looked at a fair few jumpers here. I also looked out for Sue hiding in a corner undoing and checking buttons in case she could help me, but no such luck! On the surface there was a few things I liked the look of , but touch the fabric and it goes downhill. Rough, rough, rough. I could not find one item that was not less than 98% acryylic. In the end I was throwing items back on the pile like a pro declaring "nope" " nope" and "nope again", before realising I was one of the culprits who leave this store in a devastatingly muddled mess that makes it so unwelcome to shop in at times. So gave up and empty handed moved onto...
  • P.Js. Now I rather fancied the bird print p.j bottoms on Susie SoSos blog. Looking all ironed and pretty and well worth the money, but heres the rub. I'm a funny shape. Long legs. Short body you see. ( Think Olive Oyl)I need long bottoms. They seem to come in regular or cuffed and unfortunately I don't have regular or cuffed legs so it was a no go from the start. If you are a regular or cuffed type of gal then 100% cotton p.j bottoms from £3 are to be found. There were some rather pretty owl print ones . So Primark I will confess your  P.Js could be a winner - as long as you don't have long legs.

  • Accessories then . Now I have had success here before. Buying a few scarves and the odd jewellery item that isn't too yellow or guady. If you can get over the fact that you will see a lot of people wearing your scarf then no problem. I have a lovely owl print scarf in grey, but so do two of my friends! Good job I don't mind. Today I was on the hunt for a splash of animal print. I don't want to spend much as it will go out of fashion and accessories are easily and cheaply replaced. It is also a good way of trying this trend out without looking like the old MDAL. Success - scarf in 100% cotton. Gorgeous print and feel, although the stitching needs a bit of attention, but for £4 who cares? Also an animal print belt with a gold buckle. Not too much bling, not too over the top and only £3. It won't last longer than this winter, but then will the trend?

  • I had no luck with the bling today. All brightly coloured and gaudy. Horrid. Some you win some you lose.
  • Now the bedding, again I was pleasantly surprised.100% cotton and some lovely simple and classic designs. I couldn't decide between two designs and also was uncertain what size bed we are getting my eldest son for his new room so chickened out on the purchase, but I will be back.
  • Whilst in the depths of the store I also picked up 6m of wrap for £1 and Susie is right- it does the job and doesn't rip.
  • I also saw a few other odd bits amongst the piles of tat that is there - packs of strong wooden hangers for £2.50, antibacterial handwipes £1 for 2 packs, a scarf or tie hanger for £1, and of course my usual purchases of kids underwear and jeans.

So where am I now with the whole Primark is amazing thing? Well I would say I'm on a learning curve. I still cannot find adult buys that satisfy my need for quality over cost and the fear of throwing things away too soon when they wear out gnaws at my conscience. BUT there are bargains to be found if you hunt and look AND there is money to be saved by doing this. Wrapping paper is a huge expense with three kids so thats a big plus. Bedding - if it's good quality then it's a winner. I must admit to being a White company addict but for the youngsters I don't think they'd know the difference. Scarves for yourself or as a present that is pretty , yet affordable - yes. I'll go with that. Teachers gifts at end of term maybe?

We still breathed a sigh of relief when we left and scurried guiltily off to M & S to look for school uniform. I don't know if it was the release of PPS (Post Primark stress), but I came out of M & S with a half price Mac and a pair of £5 P.Js ( 100 % cotton of course with the top included !). Very happy. And I know they will last.

I think it all comes back to the old question of budget . We have to live within our means and here is an outlet for us to get more for that budget. But,the questions that then get raised are:

  • Is it a quick fix, but not a long term saving?
  • Does it perpetuate the consumer mentality - Buy cheap, throw away quickly?
  • Is this good for our environment?
  • How do they get those prices down - or is it just easier to ignore that fact?!
  • Are these really the great prices we think they are?

Very provocative questions I know and I'm sure apply to a great many stores other than just Primark. In our quest for fabulous fashion at great prices I think the answer is to be wise, open minded, do the research, shop around and then decide. And then throw into the mix a bit of the old impulse buying just to keep it fresh!

My Style Rules.

What are Your Style Rules?

I am sure we all have different things that are important to us and make us feel content in the way we look. For some minimal is the way to go , for others perhaps a bit more effort is required, or needed! My Grandy had style, she probably wasn't that fashionable, but style is unique and about quality, care and effort.

Here are some of mine!!

1. One statement piece of jewellery is enough for me - I usually go for a statement necklace and matching earrings and leave it at that. I don't add in a load of bangles and rings . It just becomes overpowering and messy. Less is more.

2. I tend to roughly match my jewellery in some way - I feel 'unmatched' items look messy and uncoordinated. Even if it is tied together by colour or by theme e.g pearl or silver or colour it looks more 'together'. Although personally I don't particularly like things that are an exact match.

3. A coordinated scarf finishes off an outfit well. Pick colours from your outfit and match them with your scarf or go down the colour blocking route and go for contrast.

4. Invest in a couple of really good pairs of jeans. I usually have two different styles - a skinny and a bootcut. My favourites are Jonny Q as they do a size 9 and For all Mankind.

5. Find what style suits you and return to this often. Thinking of a word or two that describes your style and using this to help pick outfits can be useful.

6. Choose items that can be dressed up or down for flexibility. Wrap dresses are a great example.

7. When shopping I always think about what items I already have in my closet and put outfits together in my mind.

8. When shopping I try to complete an outfit in my mind - and when, I can I buy the jacket, shoes and jewellery !

9.For wardrobe staples such as basic T shirts , cami tops and simple knitwear - when I find a good fit, I buy in 2 or 3 different colourways to create more outfits.

10. I colour co ordinate my wardrobe. It makes getting ready so much quicker.

11. I do splurge on good quality, expensive, stand out items in my wardrobe, and save money on the things that I don't notice the difference on.

12. An outfit can be made to look much more expensive than it is, if it put together well.

13. Be unique - don't buy and wear something because  everybody else is!

14. I sell things I don't wear on e.bay - it will give you money to spend on renewing your wardrobe.

15. Establish the rules for what works and what doesn't work for you and keep those in mind when you shop.

16. If I don't love something, I don't get it.

For cut price designer wear do join sites such as these where there are great discounts and bargains to be had.

30 with 30 week 9

I am joining again this week with Lauren at From my Grey Desk for the Penultimate week of 30 with 30! I am beginning to yearn for some new items for my wardrobe now , but have got fairly used to going into town and resisting buying items here and there. Instead I have created a board on Pinterest called My Autumn Wardrobe and I am pinning possible items of clothing that I like and may purchase when I have finished with my 30 with 30 challenge - I am really quite enjoying this different approach - for now anyway!!!

I decided to try not to purchase anything during this challenge although I know this isn't a rule! I just felt it is so easy to have closet full of unworn items and yet to keep buying . I have also used this time to have a clear out of my closet and have started to list it all on e.bay to help fund my purchases for the Autumn and Winter.

So this for this weeks outfits I have tried to use some things I haven't used so much on my previous outfits and say when I might wear them.

 Outfit One: Working at home.

Outfit Two: Cooler Evenings

Outfit Three:  The School Run.

30 with 30 week 6

Week 4 for Me - Corals!

As I confessed, I did sneakily purchase a beautiful coral/orange scarf this week . I was so pleased to finally get out of the house after weeks of rain and sick children I couldn't leave something so beautiful in the shop , especially at the bargain price of £9.99! I have used it in my coral based outfits this week instead of my pink scarf in my original 30. I also picked up a lovely coral top a few months ago from a charity shop for a couple of pounds that it looks perfect with. Always up for a bargain!

The weather here has improved dramatically so we are heading into summer outfits at last. Not before time as it won't be long before Autumn arrives ..... flipping English weather. The breeze is still cool along the sea front here so a scarf is always handy to have to throw on .....

Love at first sight.

30 with 30 confession!

WHAT'S A GIRL TO DO?!

What's a girls to do when presented with this in the window of one of your favourite stores?

I live 15 minutes away from a small town, 30 minutes away from the city. I weighed it up, safer to go to the small town where there are only really two clothes shops that will lure me in and break my resolve not to spend. First time out properly since being stuck inside with poorly children and look what I come up against -  this simply is not fair play! I had to have a little look - it would have been wrong not to ......I did pretty well to only come out with .....

and

They are gorgeous and so comfy! Such a lovely graphite grey colour from Sandwich and only £42 from nearly £100 - bargain! And the coral scarf just fell into the bag too - splash of colour and all that. Sorry guys - fell off the wagon. Now back on it proper promise. XXXX

30 with 30 week 5

Week 3 for me!

Well I am doing great on the 'not buying anything' - although with everybody posting about the bargains to be had in the sales it is testing my resolve terribly! It is the old case of "Do I want it or do I need it!!?" I can't take too much credit for this as I have been somewhat stuck at home with children suffering from chicken pox so have not been near any decent shops for a while. The ability to go shopping will be curtailed completely from next weekend anyway as all three children break up for what I will loosely call the 'Summer' break! ( rain, rain, rain) . This is the rainy sight most of us in England are seeing daily at the moment in one setting or another.

RAIN RAIN RAIN

However , the idea of a girls weekend trip to London has been mentioned so I shall continue my ' no spend' only until then. Full stop.

The money I save can go towards fixing my camera which I managed to pull off the side and knock to the floor whilst vacuuming and now will not focus at all - gutted. So my photos today are relegated to phone or ipad - interesting . You can also tell I have still not painted the over bright wardrobe - job pending!

Another weather related confession, is swapping a couple of items out of my original 30 - my heavier denim jacket for a lighter, fitted Zara jacket, as although the rain keeps coming, the temperatures are lifting. I have also swapped my heavier For All Mankind jeans for lighter Zara jeans.

Outfit 1 - Spots and Stripes.

Zara jeans with zip at ankle
Fat face striped top
Zara jacket with blue striped lining and green edged sleeves.
Blue spotted scarf
Yellow Shoes ( now in the sale at Clarks, sold out online, but still in some stores)
Silver necklace and earrings
Rose bracelet
An attempt at a messy bun!

Zara is my go to store at the moment for everyday jackets that are reasonably priced ( All of these were under £40) and not too dressy for everyday wear. I think a light jacket can make a jeans and T shirt combination into an outfit. Add a scarf, some fabulous shoes and a statement bag and you are good to go! I also always have in the back of my mind when buying for every day that I am around children and my clothes need to be practical - not anything I will be concerned about spoiling. I always think simple is best - don't over clutter your outfit. If your outfit is bright, keep your jewelley classic and simple. If your outfit is plain, go for a statement item of jewellery. Everybody is different. I find if I add too much it kinda swallows me up!

These are two of my other Zara jacket faithfuls in my closet:

Outfit 2 - Colour Blocking.

Zara blue jacket
Coral top
Great Plains Skirt
White Wedges
Same jewellery as above

If you are on the look out for a jacket or blazer at the moment check a few of these out at the Zara sale:
