A Good Idea ?
We went away camping last week.
If you have been reading my blog over the last year you will remember my reluctance to participate in this crazy English obsession.
It is not that I dislike the idea of sleeping under canvas or alfresco eating. In fact the idea rather appeals.
It is just that I think it is only the English who would persist when the heavens open , to huddle together in a field , under a thin piece of material with only an open flame to cook on , with crazy children for company, fighting in a confined space.
It is just so weather dependant.
And in England the weather is NOT that dependable.
However, this year we had Sun, Sun, Sun and it was the best holiday we have had for a long time.
I am still overrun with washing, in a house devastated by building works , but we had time to reconnect as a family and spend time together, just being.
The kids relaxed and we found that the tensions fell off them too and they were good to be around again - I suspect this had something greatly to do with the fact that we were relaxed with them .
The camping was basic.
The children are not that clean.
I relied greatly on dry shampoo and hairbands.
BUT...we returned home, tired, dirty, refreshed and ready for the next chapter.......

Fantastic! I'm so glad you enjoyed it...and maybe, just maybe, I'll think about it as a holiday option next year... x
ReplyDeleteThe kids would probably love every minute like ours do...rain or not! I just struggle if the weather doesn't comply!!! X
DeleteSo glad you had a fab break away. Have to agree with you camping is SO weather dependent, it really makes or breaks a trip under canvas. I love camping, which being quite a girly girl is hard to believe and hubby isn't a massive fan of it which being an all sporting outdoor type is hard to believe too! But we are taking a short camping trip away next weekend - the first time we have camped together as a family. So wish me luck, three of us plus a dog under canvas could make for some 'interesting' times! x
ReplyDeleteGood luck..I'm sure you will have a fabulous time!! Xx
DeleteOh, such a nice post. I'm really glad that you had such a good break away. It sounds like you really needed it ... how much longer now before the house is completed?
ReplyDeleteWe just needed to get away from the house I think! The kitchen is due to start going in on week of 16th September.....then they start ripping out the old kitchen or what's left of it and making all that good! End is predicted mid to end Oct. it is in sight but this is definitely the worst part at the moment. X
DeleteSo glad the weather behaved for you Claire! Camping sounds so daunting to me plus I can't stand creepy crawlies! I know what you mean about reconnecting with the family though - we're all so wrapped up in our own little worlds usually its good to strip everything back to basics once in a while! xx
ReplyDeleteIt is hard work - the packing all the stuff you need takes forever, although we have it all in boxes now and I just wash it and put everything back in the boxes ready for next year now so in theory it shouldn't be hard....but it is! Coming back is even harder work! Not selling it am I ?!! X
DeleteNope! ;) x
DeleteGood for you. The first and last time I went camping was 28 years ago. I said never again and I kept my promise.
ReplyDeleteThat made me chuckle!!
DeleteSounds like you had an amazing time honey! It would have to be glamping for me I'm afraid but agree the weather has been glorious for campers this year x
ReplyDeleteI do take rather a lot of stuff, but the weather is the defining factor - it makes or breaks it! x
DeleteCamping is always a revelation when the weather is nice. Lovely memories for the family memory bank.
ReplyDeleteThat is just so great when it all comes together like that! Sometimes a bit of enforced outside-ness is just the ticket
ReplyDeleteCamping has never appealed to me although I dislike the idea less and less as I get older and feel the need to get-away-from-it-all more, sadly due to sporting commitments the optimum time for us to camp in November - so maybe not!
ReplyDeleteI miss camping, we downsized our tent last year & I haven't been in it!!
ReplyDeleteWhen my 2 were younger they loved the freedom, would make friends & get happily grubby & then sleep soundly worn out from all their adventures.
You see the healthiest happy children on campsites!! Glad to hear you had fun!! Xx
