The Extension Update

Meet Pearl.

The extension is slowly coming together. We are about 4 to 5 weeks behind schedule because of the problems with foundations ( or lack of them) that we encountered early on in the build. I am a little concerned that we may have to put off the painting of the exterior and the exterior ground works ( the drive) and finishing until the Spring. However the plus side to this is we will have a bit of time to regroup financially!

The builders have been great to have around. They are respectful and hard working. The quality of their work is good and they have put up with us fussing and worrying our way through this build with great patience. Can you believe this is the beginning of the sixth month they have been here?

I will continue to post a few updates over the next few weeks, but then I am going to leave it until the kitchen is installed and finished and prepare a final reveal so you can see it in all it's glory !

Here is a little confession before hand. We were given a bit of money to put towards the kitchen and at the beginning of the build we decided to splash out on one item of extravagance. Here she is...... PEARL.

Total Control AGA in Pearl Ashes
She is a beautiful pale grey colour and I am besotted with her. I am off on a AGA basics cooking course with hubby next Tuesday.I love to cook as you probably have guessed from my previous posts and it has been a real trial having only a ring to cook on for 6 months. I shall be in my element. Expect a few new recipes!!

I am still struggling a little with the wall colour. The units are a very pale french grey and the surfaces are black granite. The floor is old style mid grey flagstones . I am thinking to keep it fairly pale as the room is on the North side of the house. Maybe a hint of something in a white? The room is a large room and I do have a chimney breast around the AGA so I could paint this in a feature colour .......

Any suggestions?

  1. I am so useless when it comes to colours....so I'll not even try. Yellow and pink look good with grey in a scarf and clothing perspective though?
Can't wait to see the finished kitchen - I was actually thinking about your extension this morning #stalker haha. LOVE the new Aga - my MIL wanted to buy us one when we moved into this house but I declined. Kind of sorry I did now - they are fab, especially during the cooler weather! Ax

  2. I did think some pink accessories would look good ! I am so done with living in chaos :( The aga is a Total Control so we can turn anything on or off or just have one oven on low - it is incredible. However I have been a little bit of a chicken and put in a teenie tiny extra oven just in case I can't cope at any point !!

  3. I was also going to say yellow because it goes so well with grey but it will also give a sunny aspect to a north facing room. Love the Aga x

    1. I think that is why I have struggled - so many colours go well with grey - a nice sunny yellow sounds appealing. X

  4. Hi there, out from lurkville to say that we are 8 weeks into a double storey extension, in which my kitchen will become the kitchen of my dreams:) I have a fairly 'Plain' taste and always have been very minimalist (hard with 4 kids) and i have gone for white handleless units, grey granite, silver appliances i will paint my walls white and because i have an open plan kitchen/living/dining i am wallpapering the chimney with a silvery/mauve wallpaper from next. I'm then going to add a few purpley/mauve accesories. I think whatever you do go neutral and get your colour from accesories. Red and grey are lovely, but i have yet to find a colour that doesn't not look great with white and grey. That aga is scrumptious... Looking forward to the big reveal!!

    1. Oh - I wish you lots of luck and patience!! I can't say it has been the easiest 6 months of my life, but now the end is in sight, every day I can see I am closer to my dream kitchen! Flooring next week, kitchen starts the week after - quite nervous. I love silver and mauve - we did a wall in our bedroom in this theme and the rest a pale grey - it is gorgeous. I think I have decided to go for a neutral and like you say accessories with colour that I can change ! Thank you for your lovely comment!

  5. Farrow & ball whites are all nice. Mary berry aga cook book is great..... I used that when I did have an aga in my old house.

    1. I adore the Farrow and Ball range - I think the hallway is going to be Skimming Stone! I heard the Mary Berry book was good - I must pick that up as I am a real newbie with the age!

  6. Hi Claire! First up I love your new Aga,I can't wait to see some of the recipes you come up with! We painted our whole kitchen, dining area and sunroom in shale white from Dulux! It has a very slight tinge of blue in it depending on the amount of light shining in:)I think it might work with your colours too!I can't wait to see it all finished:)My kitchen is at a standstill at the minute as we are unsure whether we are going to keep the original cabinets or not.I don't want to shell out on new worktops and flooring until we are certain of the layout!

    1. Thank you Anne! The Shale White sounds lovely - I have to decide this week as they are putting the first coat on the plaster today so need a decision out of me! Oh dear. Decisions are so hard - I know how you feel! X

  7. Pearl looks lovely Claire - very sophisticated colour - she'll look gorgeous with the units and black granite. My worktops are black granite, so glad we shelled out for them, they are so hard-wearing and easy to clean! If it were me I'd have to warm north facing walls up a bit with a rich cream - but that's just me! Looking forward to your recipes - I have a few of my own to post but as usual not enough time! xx

    1. I am so excited about the granite - never had it before , but I've heard it is a great surface to work with. I love your recipes Jen - much more exciting than mine!

  9. On the colour a light grey would work very well. I have used dulux contrary to what people think there is great warmth and brightness if the rut colour is used.

    1. I am looking at a very light grey called bone white at the moment - I think it may be the front runner !

  10. Hi Claire - I LOVE Pearl. How about a muted neutral such as F&B Old White / Off white or Oxford Stone? Could be a good cobtrast (but not too much so) with the greeny-grey of the units and the soft grey of 'Pearl'? Cooking on an aga will be fab, looking forward to the recipes :-) xx

    1. She is rather lovely isn't she - I'm a bit like a new mum!! I think you are right - I am looking at a colour called bone white and it looks like it might be the one!

  11. Love the look you have gone for.....I would stick to a neutral colour scheme, and as with clothes, add accessories in colours that you can easily and cheaply change as interior fashion trends alter! Looking forward to seeing the finished article xx

    1. Good advice - I want to keep it calm and muted with colour in accessories so think I will stick to the neutral theme as you suggest! xx

  12. I can't offer any advice really - I'm so bad with paint colours. I painted my last kitchen at least 10 times in the seven years I was there. Bit too much of a perfectionist. I personally love James White in the F&B range as this is a white with a hint of grey green in it. You don't really know till you have a swatch on the wall next to Pearl.

I think you're really going to enjoy Pearl.

    1. I have got rather a lot of sample pots I must admit - I don't want to re paint it straight away as for the first time in a long time someone else is painting it not me !! I think the neutral is the way to go - you can all help me with accessories next then! I wanted a nice grey sofa but hubby said it would look like the inside of a battleship if I wasn't careful. What does he know! I do sort of like grey though.

    2. Yup - my hubs shouted me down over a grey sofa as well. Said it was too dark and too austere. Wusspot.

  13. As it's a big space and north facing with lots of cool shades like grey and black, you might need to add some warmth and trick the eye with a warm white like jasmine white by dulux. We've just painted our north facing front room in this and it looks so luminous. I love it. It looks more like a south facing room painted in white. Used by lots of interior designers I think. Then a feature wall in your favourite grey? Whatever you choose will no doubt look flawless Mrs.A! X
